Australia captain Pat Cummins will miss the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar trophy against India to be at home with his seriously ill mother.

Cummins returned to Australia after India’s victory in the second Test in Delhi but was originally planning to rejoin his team-mates in time for the third match.

However, Cricket Australia confirmed on Friday that Cummins would stay in Australia to be with his mother who is ‘ill and in palliative care’.

‘I have decided against returning to India at this time,’ Cummins, 29, said. ‘I feel I am best being here with my family.

‘I appreciate the overwhelming support I have received from Cricket Australia and my team-mates. Thanks for your understanding.’

Former Australia captain Steve Smith will take over from Cummins for the next match, which starts in Indore on Wednesday.

India took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the four-match series after securing emphatic wins in Nagpur and Delhi.

Australia will also be without opening batter David Warner, who has flown home after suffering a concussion and a fractured elbow in the previous Test.
