Swapping the tropical Caribbean heat for Devon, Kris Marshall’s popular detective Humphrey Goodman returns in the BBC’s Death in Paradise spin-off Beyond Paradise – and fans will recognise another familiar face.

Kris left Death in Paradise back in 2017 when his character headed to London to declare his undying love for his fiancee, Martha.

But we didn’t get to find out what happened next…

Now we meet the pair as they relocate to Shipton Abbott near the Devonshire coast, where quirky yet brilliant copper Humphrey joins the local police force.

Cue all sorts of baffling cases, including a body in a crop circle and an arsonist who likes nursery rhymes.

And guest stars throughout the series include Montserrat Lombard, Rufus Jones, a crop of old EastEnders’ faces – Davood Ghadami, Phil Daniels and Annette Badland – plus Hi-de-Hi! actress Ruth Madoc, in her last role before her death in December last year.

But who will star in the new series?

Let’s find out who you’ll be watching.

Kris Marshall

Kris reprises his role as popular and endearingly awkward DI Humphrey Goodman (Picture: Craig Hardie)

Kris returns as DI Humphrey Goodman, the lovable, clumsy yet brilliant detective who solved plenty of crimes in the Caribbean’s fictional Saint Marie. And now he’s squashed into his mother-in-law’s spare room.

‘Wherever he goes, he leaves a sort of mini tidal wave of madness behind him and he’s causing that tidal wave to ripple through the village of Shipton Abbott,’ says Kris.

‘In Beyond Paradise, we don’t have so many deaths. We have more kidnapping, sheep rustling, art thefts, ghostly apparitions…it’s still paradise, just a different kind. We’re maintaining that sunny disposition.’

Aside from playing DI Goodman for four series of Death in Paradise, Kris is best-known for his roles as Nick Harper in the BBC sitcom My Family, and condom-laden Colin Frissell in Love Actually.

Sally Bretton

Sally returns as Humphrey’s love interest, cafe owner Martha Lloyd (Picture: PA)

Saly reprises her role as Humphrey’s overthinking partner, Martha – who is described as the ‘yin to his yang’. After Martha’s father dies, the couple decide they want a slower pace of life and return to her home town in Devon – moving into the spare room at her mum’s house.

‘Martha’s always trying to keep a few boundaries in place, which her mum usually just walks straight through,’ says Sally. ‘I got asked a lot about what happened to Martha and whether they lived happily ever after.’

She adds that viewers don’t need to have watched Death In Paradise to enjoy Beyond Paradise.

‘Humphrey hasn’t started work at the local police station yet and Martha doesn’t have premises for this restaurant dream of hers. Will they have the finances? You’re right at the beginning of the journey with them.’

Aside from Martha, Sally is best known for Not Going Out, where she plays Lee Mack’s long-suffering girlfriend Lucy Adams. She also played Donna in The Office.

Zahra Ahmadi

Zahra Ahmadi plays new character DS Esther Williams, a single parent who had a child when she was 17. She’s clever, professional and has quickly risen through the ranks in the police force.

When she first meets Humphrey, ‘he appears like a bit of a bumbling idiot, but, as the series progresses, her opinion changes of him and she realises that he is a brilliant detective’.

Zahra describes Esther’s relationship with the rest of the team as ‘slightly dysfunctional, but really great’.

Back in 2007-8, Zahra played EastEnders’ Shabnam Masood before the role was recast in 2014, and she has also appeared in crime dramas The Bay and Marcella.

Dylan Llewellyn

Dylan Llewellyn plays new character PC Kelby Hartford, ‘a local lad who grew up in Shipton Abbott, a close-knit community where everybody knows everyone. Which means a lot of criminals they catch, he knows.

‘He is an endearing, kind-hearted “Jack the lad”, and everyone sees him as a little brother.’

Dylan is best-know for starring as English schoolboy James Maguire in the Channel 4 comedy Derry Girls, and he also appeared as Martin ‘Jono’ Johnson in Hollyoaks back in 2011-12.

‘Finally, I’m playing an adult! It’s been fun and different in comparison to playing an awkward teen or a university student. There are similarities with my past roles in that he has a good heart – I love playing characters like that.’

Felicity Montague

Keeping everyone on Beyond Paradise in check is office support worker Margo Martins, played by Felicity Montague.

And she’s not impressed with Humphrey from the off!

‘I love it when I’m in a spat with Kris Marshall’s character Humphrey,’ says Felicity. ‘I find them just delicious. His expressions are so bewitching.

‘On the surface, Margo’s very tough on everyone and she doesn’t really want to give much away about herself. Underneath it all, I think she lives for them. It’s quite heart rending because she hasn’t got a massive family home life.’

Fans of Alan Partridge will recognise Felicity as his long-suffering PA, Lynn. She has also appeared in Sky One’s Brassic and The Durrells.

Barbara Flynn

Barbara Flynn takes on the new role of Anne Lloyd, Humphrey’s meddling mother-in-law. ‘Anne is a little bit at sea at the moment in her life down in Shipton Abbott with her husband and Mottie (Martha) growing up,’ says Barbara.

‘Anne’s relationship with Humphrey is not as plain sailing as, ‘Oh, my goodness me, this man is in love with my daughter, I’m going to open my gate’. She finds him rather bewildering and astonishingly… tall!’

The veteran actress has appeared in a range of dramas, from Cracker to Cranford, and guest starred in The Durrells. She also appeared in an episode of Death in Paradise back in 2020 as a different character.

Beyond Paradise starts on BBC1 tonight at 8pm.
