Bukayo Saka was overcome with emotion on his return to Arsenal’s training ground for the first time since his exploits with England during the European championships.

The 19-year-old was the breakthrough star of England’s campaign which saw Gareth Southgate’s team reach their first major tournament final since 1966.

Saka was a surprise inclusion in Southgate’s squad, but was named man of the match in the final group game against Czech Republic and was a near permanent fixture in the team thereafter.

The winger’s tournament ended in heartbreak, however, when he missed the decisive penalty in an agonising shootout defeat against Italy, after which he was subjected to a stream of abhorrent racial abuse on social media.

Saka responded by calling on the various social media platforms to take decisive action against individuals who use their platforms to direct hate at footballers and other athletes.

Upon his return to Arsenal’s Colney base on Wednesday, Saka was greeted by a wall of letters from fans who had sent messages of support to the youngster, and the Hale End Academy graduate was almost overawed by the response from the club’s fans.

‘Oh my gosh, oh my gosh it’s getting bigger as I (get closer),’ said Saka. I’m speechless. How do I even say thank you for all of this.

‘Can I just pick it all up and take it home?

Saka’s next target will be to build up his fitness ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League opener against newly promoted Brentford a week on Friday and Saka could feature in Sunday’s pre-season friendly against north London rivals Spurs.
