Gary Lineker slams VAR decision to disallow Arsenal goal vs Leicester

Gary Lineker was left ‘bemused’ after Leandro Trossard’s goal against Leicester was ruled out by VAR.

The Premier League leaders thought they had taken the lead in the 27th minute when the January signing from Brighton collected Granit Xhaka’s pass, cut inside and curled the ball into the top corner beyond Danny Ward.

Arsenal’s joy was short-lived, however, when referee Craig Pawson was called over to the pitchside monitor to rule on a potential foul by Ben White on the Leicester City goalkeeper.

Pawson adjudged that White had impeded Ward’s attempts to punch clear Bukayo Saka’s corner but replays showed the England international had made only minimal contact with the Foxes’ No.1.

Even Lineker, a Leicester fanatic, was left astonished by the decision to rob Trossard of what would have been his second goal for the Gunners since his move from Brighton.

The Match of the Day presenter wrote on Twitter: ‘Arsenal have had a goal ruled out after a VAR intervention.

‘As a Leicester fan, I feel relieved, but bemused by a decision that could not be described, under any circumstances, as a clear and obvious error.’

Arsenal did at least gain a measure of justice when they took the lead within a minute of the restart with Trossard to the fore again.

The diminutive forward poked the ball through the legs of Harry Soutar and into the path of Gabriel Martinelli.

Despite the acute angle, the Brazil international did well to poke his low shot beyond Ward having fended off the attention of Wilfried Ndidi.

The officials were back in action minutes later when Martinelli set-up Saka for an easy tap-in after Martin Odegaard had sliced open the home defence with a trademark eye of the needle pass only for VAR to rule another goal out for offside.
