Paul Mescal has officially shocked us all to the core by revealing that we’ve all been pronouncing his name incorrectly all these years.

The Irish actor, 27, is currently riding high for his critically-acclaimed role in Aftersun, which has seen him nominated for a Bafta and an Oscar, after rising to fame during the pandemic after starring as main character Connell Waldron in the BBC miniseries Normal People,

The series, based on Sally Rooney’s 2018 novel of the same name, followed the lives of Connell and his close friend Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones) through college.

It became an acclaimed hit with both critics and viewers, with Mescal going on to appear in Olivia Colman’s movie The Lost Daughter.

Most recently, Mescal’s new film Aftersun won the Bafta for outstanding debut as newcomer director Charlotte Wells took home the big award.

But despite an impressively fast rise from unknown actor to household name, it seems we’ve still got more to learn about Mescal.

In a brand new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar-nominated actor revealed that we’ve all been getting his name completely wrong.

While discussing whether he would like to start his own footwear brand or launch a line of mezcal tequila, he chose the latter for a very specific reason.

‘I feel like at some point I should look into launching a mezcal tequila line. People get confused with how to pronounce my name because of the drink mezcal.’

He continued: ‘Everybody does it. I pronounce it “Mess-kle”, so I wonder, if I launched a tequila line, I would call it Mescal’s Mezcal. I’m on the fence.’

We’ve had to take a moment to recover as well! So that’s Mess-kle, not mez-kal, everyone.

If Mescal’s planning on launching that tequila line then we’d like to pour one out for everyone who pronounced it ‘mez-kal’ in front of him.

Earlier this week, Mescal spoke out after a fan allegedly groped him during a recent encounter – the fan was then given a stern talking to.

He said: ‘She put her hand on my ass. I thought it was an accident but the hand followed. I remember tensing up and feeling just, like, fury.’

‘I turned to her and said: “What’re you doing? Take your hand off my ass”. It was gross and creepy.’
